| Abstract: | The pattern of union employment shares and union wage premiums across and within industries for the years 1973-86 are analysed. The decline in the aggregate share of union employment in the economy and estimate of aggregate union wage premium are depicted, shares of union and non-union employment are presented, changes in union premium are discussed, within industry premiums are estimated, opportunity wage indices for union and non-union sectors are calculated. The importance of union wage premium in explaining union employment is analysed, results are discussed. The increase in the premium explains 21 to 64 p.c. of the decline in union shares. The industries with the rising premiums are experiencing decline in union employment shares. |
