Abstract:Income smoothing has been conjectured to be widespread, although prior evidence in support of deliberate management manipulations is inconclusive. Artificial income smoothing is studied here by comparing the variability of income to the variability of sales. No difference was found in the incidence of smoothing between periphery- and core sector when sector is the only explanatory variable. Adding firm size and investor scrutiny as explanatory variables, there is a difference in smoothing between economic sectors for different sized firms. Regardless, income smoothing occurs at all levels of the USA economy, core and periphery, large and small.
