Abstract:Strategies of industrial firms in the newly industrialized countries /NOCs/ of Pacific Asia have involved transfers of production technologies and cost minimalization tactics. Export-led development strategies of NICs in the 1960s were characterized by labour intensiveness; unskilled and semi-skilled labour; and predominantly female workers. This strategy caused alienation of Asian citizens and labour unrest. As cheap and easily controlled labour is drawing to a close, multinational corporations /MNCs/ automated production processes. Changing demand side conditions make a more enlightened policy necessary. Suggestions for reformulating strategic focus of MNCs for the 1990s are made.
