Abstract: | Several obstacles, impeding companies' movement toward globalization are identified. Time zone and cultural differences complicate coordination. Organizational structures, management philosophies, and performance evaluation systems also can inhibit cooperation. It is shown that the availability of modern information technology (IT) is a useful support to the global organization. A wide variety of computer software development that is ongoing today are reviewed. The progress in specialized processors is also mentioned. Finally, four issues that need to be addressed for the successful application of IT are examined: identification of business opportunities; justification of IT investments; delivery of the new system; absorption of IT by the global firm. |
