Abstract:The processes which generate bank performance are examined. The performance of the Finnish savings banks (the SKOPBANK Group) is studied in detail. The first phase is based on cross-sectional data consisting of a sample of 79 banks at the beginning of the 1980s. Three performance groups are identified by cluster analysis using five indicators: growth, profitability, insolvency, debt, and investments. The second phase is based on sixteen case banks representing the three performance groups. The data there comprise the documented development of the studied banks, and the work histories of their managers. The findings underline the significance of the bank's development path in the explanation of the nature and change of its performance.
