Abstract:The elitist way French managers are selected, trained and fostered provides an explanation of France's economic success. It may also explain the impressive manner in which French business has been able to advance and exploit the emergence of the Single Market in Europe. In presenting this overview, the authors have consciously tried to look at the management in France as outsiders, and to say what is different and interesting about it from an Anglo-Saxon, and particularly American viewpoint. The research discussed has the aim of updating the general characterization since the work of M. Crozier in 1961, and giving it a broader empirical base.
