Abstract:Bad loans have eaten up banks' margins and many small companies have gone to the wall. Meanwhile economic growth forecasts predict a slowdown ahead. South Korea's banking industry is perhaps its own worst enemy. Controlled and protected by the government, commercial banks helped the country's economic miracle. But their dependence on the government produced incompetence. Bad loans sit on their balance sheets and capital losses eat into profits. The banks' reckless investment on Korea's jittery stock market was the main cause of profit erosion in 1995.
