Abstract: | Building upon sociological conceptions of formal organization and collective behavior, the life histories of 52 organizations that emerged during different disasters are defined, described and modelled. There are 24 different ways of organizing to meet the demands of emergencies. Using organization variables of timing, duration, restructuring and survival a model was developed for the life histories of ephemeral organizations, based on data from the Disaster Research Center. Theories of formal organization and collective behavior are mutually important for studies of organizing. |
