Abstract: | Contemporary laboratories are extremely complex buildings. Laboratories have been challenged to not only accommodate but facilitate the process of discovery and development. E.g. a laboratory - an engineering building - was built in the U.S. to stimulate close communication among a large number of engineers. Laboratories are also highly expensive buildings to operate. They must also meet stringent standards for a specific research project and yet be flexible enough to quickly accommodate the development of new products requiring new technologies. History of laboratory architecture is a record of the strategies architects, engineers and owners have employed to meet these conflicting objectives. |
