Abstract:The paper considers the end of the upswing in Euroland. Economic expansion in Euroland has decelerated considerably after mid-2000. The reduced dynamics are due to the weakening of growth in the world economy, the tightening of monetary policy by the European Central Bank (ECB) as well as the burden imposed by higher oil prices. The authors cover the following topics: 1) Euroland: End of the upswing - no reason to cut interest rates; 2) overheating in Ireland: what can be done; 3) fiscal policy: large countries stop consolidation efforts; 4) monetary policy: ECB should not cut interest rates; 5) outlook: GDP grows in line with potential output (original in German).
