Abstract:The article investigates how service firms are remodeling their promotion and career models to better fit the changing market context and to adapt to the institutional pressures. The results are based on a qualitative study of 10 large UK based law firms. The findings indicate that most of these firms do not have a formal up-or-out policy, but it is nevertheless used in the practice. The study also found out that many firms have introduced a novel career policy, which offers a comprehensive learning and development deal to workers without any expectation that unsuccessful candidates for promotion to partner should leave the firm.
