Abstract:This paper deals with the question of the intertwining of practice and passion (hereafter as: p-and-p.) in scientific work, considering passion as a collective attachment to the subjects and objects of knowledge (here as: knw.) in an epistemic community. It is drawn on a research program on Renato Caccioppoli (1904-59), the famous Italian mathematician, and his working group of mathematicians, showing the use of sociology of attachment in the description of the link between p-and-p.,and knw. A qualitative methodology is used with the focus on interviews and documents (letters, books, etc.) on historical and contemporary accounts of schools of mathematics etc.
