Abstract:Africa is constantly being lectured about private enterprise and entrepreneurship as if these concepts were completely alien to the continent. In fact, as the paper points out, private enterprise was the norm during Africa's golden period. Since the early 1990's, Africa's private sector has been the focus of a lot of attention. At the many conferences on the continent's development, the underdeveloped nature of the private sector is constantly stressed. African countries are urged to look at other parts of the world in adopting policies geared towards the private sector. While it is always good for Africa to learn from the experience of more developed economies elsewhere, no one seems to realize that our own past offers many lessons.
