Abstract:The author considers how groups can maintain cooperation without clear legal mechanisms and institutions that are usually taken for granted in the ‘western’ economies. An extensive empirical data of collective action in Ghana is presented in the article. The case studies show how cooperation is based on culturally specific norms. Conscious calculations, accustomed actions and unquestioning compliance affect the decision s to cooperate. The local context seems to influence on the embodiment of trust and power, and the cooperative structures that are embedded in the culturally specific social relations are the basis of facilitation of cooperative activities.
