Abstract:The study is based on resource-based view and the knowledge-based view of the firm. By deconstructing some of their key elements, this paper suggests that there are three essential components to knowledge management systems that affect firm's performance. Firm's ability to create new knowledge and its ability build on it are the first two components. In addition, the firm's ability to appropriate long-term rents from inventions by developing subsequent inventions has an effect on performance. As a method, the study uses regression analysis. The dataset consists of more than 30 000 patent records from 42 firms in five industries. There is found to be a positive relation between firm's growth rate and its ability generate rare and valuable knowledge and to build on it.
