Abstract:Taking into considerarion both aggregate industry level and disaggregated sectoral levels, this article analyses a number of basic characteristics of firm growth processes. The authors use data from Italian manufacturing companies to find out the properties of firm growth dynamics that are robust under disaggregation, and to compare the results obtained with different definitions of company size. The findings of this analysis suggest that there exist regularities holding across all sectors, although different sectors have different properties with respect to firm size distribution, degrees of concentration and the autoregressive structure of the growth processes. An example of these regularities is the approximate unit root nature of the growth process and the power exponential shape of the growth rates density.
