Abstract:The baseline for this study is Gibrat's (hereafter as: G's) law contrasted with strategic management (henceforth as: str-mgmt). Subsequently, this logic is applied to a group of remarkably dynamic high-growth firms: 'gazelles'. Using a new British data set incl. information on more than 100 gazelles, str-mgmt. theory is used to explain several empirical key findings. These findings help explain: 1. why G's law ... does not generally hold, 2. which variables have a predictable influence on firm performance and 3. why routine application of 'best practice' strategies is unlikely to support firm growth in a changing economic environment.
