Abstract:A stochastic multi-item production model is developed. It is based upon a cyclic queue system. The model expresses the impact of processing rates, setup times and their variabilities on work-in-process inventories and on production capacity. The elimination of variability is critical, because it both reduces effective capacity and leads to nonintuitive effects. These results should assist management to evaluate the comparative advantages of reducing product specific variabilities, setup times, or processing times.
