| Abstract: | Cosmetatos's approximation performs quite well in heavy traffic. However, it overestimates the true value when the number of servers is large or the traffic is light. In the study the focus is first on a normalized quantity that is a ratio of the mean waiting times for the M/D/s and M/M/s queues. Better accuracy both for large s and in light traffic is obtained by modifying Cosmetatos's approximation using some asymptotic properties of the quantity. The quality of the approximation is assessed by comparing it with the exact value and some previous approximation. |
