Abstract:Bipolarity was one of three related and unexpected features of international politics after World War II that people struggled to understand. The other two were cold war and the emergence of nuclear weapons technology. The author discusses the development of the concept of bipolarity in the context of these other features of the postwar system, identifies its various meanings, and criticizes its use as an explanatory concept. Different ways of characterizing the post-World War II distribution of power are also discussed.
