Abstract:Predictions of a coming labor shortage have become commonplace, and many companies are building long- range human resource plans around them. These predictions cannot be sustained, however, when the arguments and assumptions behind them are examined closely. There is essentially no chance of a real labor shortage, and even the odds of sustained tight labor markets are remote. Employers may well face new and more difficult challenges in recruiting and hiring, but those challenges will be because of changes in the employment relationship that contribute to retention problems, not because of any shortfall of workers.
