Abstract: | The economy of the United States is entering a period of labour shortages while encountering an increased demand of proficient workers. At the same time , the percentage of men over 50 in the labour force has diminished to its lowest point in American history. The availability of older Americans as a source of skilled and seasoned labour is examined. The results of a recent survey are described and analyzed. Estimates of the number of available older workers are presented. It is shown why the available workers stopped working. Most of them left their last job involuntarily. Some practical guidelines for action are provided. |
