Abstract:A variety of explanations of why young workers change their employment status so often in the early years of their careers are reviewed. There have been relatively few empirical studies that have examined the role of training, demand, and other factors in predicting the probability of leaving an employer. Using survey data on the types of training and responses to a questionnaire it is shown that almost three-quarters of the sample leave their first employer during the first 4 years after school. Almost 17 percent of the sample experienced some form of formal training in their first job. College graduates were much likely to have received some form of on-the-job training, while women were more likely to have received off-the-job training.
