Abstract: | There are different forms of socially inefficient actions in organizations. In this paper, mobbing/bullying is discussed as a special form of inefficient behavior. Bullying is economically interpreted as a possibly rational behavior of an individual from a rent-seeking perspective. It is shown that bullying is not typically caused by individual motives (for instance antipathy), but also by structural influences (for instance the chosen form of work organization). Finally it is argued for bullying not being induced by new forms of decentralized organization structures provided that the management of the firm takes notice of the complementarities between organizational decisions and personnel politics. |
