| Abstract: | This article concentrates on the operation and management of agency labour by employers, observing strong contradictions between the employers' stated reasons for agency labour use and the employment agencies' vision of why such labour is utilised. While the article generally discusses agency labour, also the position of migrant workers within the agency sector is taken into account, as agencies have represented a significant way of employing migrant labour. It draws primarily on 22 in-depth interviews with employers and employment agencies, mostly in the food processing, cleaning and care sectors. The results imply that while some employers were using agency staff to cover for specific production peaks, others had used it as an alternative method of dealing with vacancies otherwise possibly resulting in permanent employment. |
