Abstract: | The important role of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the East European transition is analyzed. Privatization - including new business ventures - is shown to be vital for Eastern Europe which needs outward orientation and sustaining capital inflows. The links between privatization and FDI are investigated. Some new aspects of the role of FDI in economic development are highlighted. However, information costs so far are high and political risks considerable. Countries in Eastern Europe must adopt new liberal investment policies to stimulate the flow of FDI. Moreover, diversification of source country flows will be important to generate significant flows that could help to restore sustaining growth in Eastern Europe. |
