Abstract:The first half of 1996 marked a slowdown of GDP growth, industrial output and exports in Central and Eastern Europe, but towards the end of the year, export growth to Western markets seems to have picked up again. Contrary to expectations, the end of the output decline in Russia and Ukraine did not occur. In Russia, real GDP as officially measured shrank by another 6 per cent during the first nine months of 1996; disinflation, in contrast, was sharper than expected, with monthly consumer price inflation averaging 0,5 per cent during the four months to October.
