| Abstract: | This paper analyzes the size and value of landed estates for a gorup of businessmen profiled in the Dictionary of Great Britain and Ireland. The paper explains the significance of a ratio of personal to a landed wealth in the debate on businessmen and land purchase in the 19th century, looks at source data, outlines a method for calculating personal wealth and the value of wealth in landholdings, estimates the share of wealth tied up in landed assets, and analyses the nature of land ownership using biographical data. |
