Abstract:The "new" approach to economic development in the period before 1800 raises the question whether the history of the Kuznets curve can be extended into the early modern period. in other words, was there a connection between "premodern economic growth" and the development of the inequality of income and wealth? This question is at the centre of this article. In short, the proposition is that premodern economic growth was coupled with an upswing of inequality. First, the patterns of inequality in Europe during the early modern period will be examined.
