| Abstract: | A further step was taken towards the meltdown of barriers between banking and insurance in Europe with the announcement in August of the intended "merger" between Credit Swiss Group and the Swiss insurance company Winterthur. The deal reflects the climate of on-going structural change in financial markets and deregulation that is shaking up the insurance sector. Mergers and consolidation remain central themes in Western European banking. |
