Abstract: | Industrial countries: Recovery strenghtens, monetary policy remains expansionary. In industrial countries, the recovery gained some strength in 1996. On average, real GDP rose by roughly 2.5 percent. There were, however, substantial differences btw. the three regions in the course of the year 1996. In western Europe, the previous weakness was overcome in the spring of 1996. In Japan, economic activity accelerated last year, while the upturn in the USA continued throughout 1996. Inflation remained moderate. Consumer prices increased by approximately 2 percent as in the previous two years. |
