| Abstract: | Four major European markets for credit and charge cards are overviewed: France, Italy, the United Kingdom and West Germany. Three basic types of cards are considered: bank credit cards, charge of travel and entertainment cards, merchant specific cards. After a brief overview of key trends, the recent developments in the market are discussed. The data presented on the four major markets include credit card turnover at current and at constant 1985 prices, number of credit cards in circulation and number of outlets accepting credit cards by country, and proportion of consumer spending effected credit cards from 1985 to 1989. Pan-European comparisons, major companies and company profiles are also presented, and an outlook is given. |
