Abstract: | An overview of the European beer market is presented. Trends in consumption in the 1980s show static demand, primarily due to competition from non-alcoholic drinks, and consumer anxiety over health issues and driving. In West Germany and France demand has clearly been in decline for several years. The only growth area is low/no alcohol beers. Imported beers represent another growth sector in most markets. In 1989 the nominal sales values in the UK and France increased by 8 and 4 percent, resp. "International brands" are also gaining strength in beer markets; they are dominated by Heineken. Tables presenting retail sales, pan-European consumption, turnover of major multinationals, and index of value sales forecast 1989-1994 are shown. |
