Abstract:Stress is a much abused and misused term. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) defines it as excessive pressure that people are unable to cope with. This is a good working definition, as it highlights the two ways to alleviate the effects of stress: reducing excessive pressures at work and helping individuals to cope better. One without the other will result in an imbalance in the partnership between employer and employee.
