Abstract:The study of coping with stress is assuming a central role in understanding the stress process. A case for a descriptive classification of coping methods based on careful empirical work is presented. The results of four studies of supervisors, and administrators, nurses, teachers and church ministers are presented and compared.Five main forms of coping with work-related stress can be identified: rational, task oriented behavior, emotional release, distraction, passive rationalization and social support.
