Abstract:This article examines the effect of workplace change on employee mental health and well-being. A comprehensive measure of organizational change is developed and tested and is then used in a prospective longitudinal study of nearly 5400 employees in six UK National Health Service Trusts. It was found that participants who reported an increase in the amount of work over the previous year were more likely to be classed as General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) cases, while increased training and promotion and improved job security had a positive impact on employee mental health. Quantity or degree of change indicated a somewhat ambiguous relationship with GHQ status.
