Abstract:This study reports the results of an empirical investigation of the timeliness of financial statements issued by 128 companies listed on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE) in 1999. It is found that all companies meet the regulatory deadline but with a wide range in time achieved. Rank regression analysis identifies audit firm and industry sector as significant factors explaining variations in timeliness. No evidence is found of a significant association with corporate size, gearing, profitability, listing status or listing age. Interpretation and analysis are offered, and implications discussed in the context of the operation of the ASE.
