Abstract:The Spanish market for CDs, records and tapes is examined, both prerecorded and blank, audio and video. The total market grew at current prices by 63 percent between 1987 and 1991, to ESP 166 billion, an increase in real terms of 29 percent. CDs are the fastest growing category, expanding by over 700 percent 1987-1991, to 13.1 million units. Sales of LPs declined by 20 percent to 16.5 million units 1989-1991. It is believed that in ten years LP records will no longer be sold. Prerecorded audio tapes continue to sell well. The music market is dominated by popular music (85 percent of volume sales). Video sales fell by 45 percent to 9.3 million units 1989-1991. The total market is expected to grow by 20 percent, to 1996.
