Abstract:The unification of the two Germanies offered a great opportunity for the Bremen based German coffee corporation, the Kraft-Jacobs-Suchard-Group. The sales of the firm increased by 40 p.c. At the same time, the new opportunities meant considerable challenges. Logistic problems arose: the amount of coffee to be transported from the port in Hamburg to the roast plant in Berlin has become so big that it was not easy to ensure that the supplies arrive in Berlin in time. This problem is over. Since 1st July, the firms transports the coffee supplies by rail on so called logistic trains. These special trains travel by fixed schedule four times a week. The details of this logistic solution are described.
