Abstract:The worldwide music industry is worth around 25 billion pounds a year. About 80% of that is controlled by just five companies - Bertelsmann, EMI, Sony, Universal and Warner. These are the people who have, in the past, managed to persuade the entire developed world to throw out a lifetime's collection of vynil LPs and to replace them with overpriced CDs. Little, you might think would seriously worry these companies. But nothing scares a music executive these days quite like a teenager with a computer.
