Abstract:This article examines whether a status order can be recognized in contemporary British society, and focuses on the occupational structure of close friendship. It is shown that one dimension of this structure reflects a hierarchy of status, and is gender-neutral. The relation btw. status and both educational levels and income is also studied. The results indicate that in some classes statuses are quite homogenous but in others the status stratification is quite wide. It is concluded that the Weberian distinction btw. status and class is still valid.
