Abstract:This study examines how having a partner affects the career mobility. Partners' resources might support labor market advancement. Earlier theoretical research has also presumed a marriage penalty for women whereas having a partner has a positive effect on men's careers. In addition, the study hypothesizes that due to individualization the affect of partner declines. As a data set, 5,068 complete careers are used. The study finds that having a partner has no effect on the career mobility of women. For men, small positive effect is found.
