| Abstract: | An analysis of the West German market for pre-recorded music /"Tontraeger"/ is presented. The market comprises records /primarily "single" or 45 rpm units and "long-players" or 33 rpm units/, CD and pre-recorded cassettes and tapes. The sales in 1990 totalled DEM 3,926 million at current prices, representing an increase of 8.5 percent in 1989, although in real terms the market declined by 10 percent. Sales of records declined by 38 percent from 1986-1990. Volume sales recording industry is dominated by the local subsidiaries of Polygram. Tables are presented showing market figures, sources of supply, market sectors, brands and manufacturers and retail distribution. Sales are expected to rise by 19 percent by 1995. |
