| Abstract: | The article explains structures of regional networks and their influence on the competitive position of firms that are a part of these networks. The main example which gives the analysis an empirical content is the idea of a "biotech region" fostered by the German Ministry of Science. Is this idea well grounded in theory? To answer this question theories and empirical research from economic geography, "geographical economics" and the management of change are reviewed. It is shown that the industrial policy favored by the Ministry of Science has a number of pitfalls which should be considered in the next steps of policy implementa- tion. However, what is also needed is further research on this important area of industrial policy and organization. |
