Abstract:The proper regulatory and supervisory responses to be developed with regard to the explosive growth of the global market in financial derivatives over the last two decades remain among the most difficult outstanding issues for national and international regulatory authorities. While the use of financial derivatives by end-users has resulted in lowering funding costs through arbitrage opportunities and the issuance of customised debt, increased returns on underlying investments through better management of existing portfolio or assets, financial intermediaries have also been able to manage their own exposures more effectively as well as substantially increase their earnings.
