Abstract:Consumers of software encounter a acquisition-mode decision, namely whether to purchase or pirate. Marketers face the decision whether to try and stop piracy or just ignore it, and policymakers face the decision whether to implement interventionist or 'laissez faire' policies. This article focuses on the consumer perspective, exploring it on a comparative basis. The findings suggest that ethics as a factor is embedded in a multidimensional set of determinant factors affecting software piracy, such as attitudes, legal aspects and social support.
