Abstract:This paper discusses why, if copy protection is very difficult to remove, do crackers invest their skill and time in this activity instead of more profitable and legal employment. The authors develop a framework of neutralisation, justification and motivation. It is shown that the challenge of removing the copy protection from software is the strongest motivation for the actions of crackers. Higher social status was regarded as a by-product of cracking.
