Abstract:This paper develops the theory of social capital by exploring the creation of organizational social capital within family firms, which is often overlooked organizational form. It is found at least two forms of social capital exists in family firms: the family's and the firm's. This study explores mechanisms that link a family's social capital to the creation of firm's social capital. In addition, it is examined how the creation is affected by factors underlying the the family's social capital. Contingency dimensions affecting these relationships and possible risks of family social capital are also identified in the paper. The study suggests that these insights are also generalizable to some other type of organisations, for example hybrid organizations.
