Abstract:The purpose of the paper is to discuss the constructs of complexity and simplicity and the tension between them, in the context of management and organization theory and practice. The theory of management suggests that instead of matching complex environments with complex organizations (a practice supported by the Ashby law), only a more simple organization can be spacious and flexible enough to overcome environmental turbulence. This article proposes that, paradoxically, a simple organizational structure could facilitate complex organizing. According to the authors, organizational theory can be seen to be derived from the interplay of simplicity and complexity.
