Abstract:It has now been over six years since a major disturbance in the Middle East interrupted the international flow of oil. But the preceding decades saw significant disruptions in 1973, 1979, 1980 and 1990, all of which raised world oil prices; and in 1986 when the practical collapse of OPEC led to a 50 per cent drop in prices. What are the prospects for continued calm in the future? And how much difference does it make? This article will address the prospects for political stability in the Persian Gulf region, the interests of governments there, and the physical vulnerabilities of the region.
